I cut out all the wood for my outdoor aviary today and I have begun thinking about how to do the floor/bottom. I think I will likely use cement pavers to make the floor and put some wire below the pavers to prevent burrowing into the cage. I am most concerned about mice and rats. Not sure I can really keep out the mice as they are so tiny. Should I put some mesh on the bottom of the cage to prevent vermin from coming in? How do people attach their cages to the ground/cement/etc?

I have aviaries Dynabolted to concrete and others on pavers I have used an "L" shaped peg similar to a tent peg hammering the long leg of the "L" into the gap between the pavers until the short part comes over a floor bar.

If your pavers are installed tightly, nothing but weeds and ants should be able to get between the pavers.

Thanks for the help. I guess I am more concerned with the joint between the bottom of the wooden cage and the pavers/cement. Afraid something will crawl under there or lift the cage. I could put a layer of wire mesh on the underside too?

Hello Lori,
You can use steel form stakes, Buy them at h.d they are 5/8" in diameter and have holes drilled into them so that you can nail/screw them to your base . They come in 12" on up. Hope this helps. Lori how's Oakland these day's, I grew up there.

Sorry about the delayed response, my computer was down, Lori the stakes look like wood dowels with a point at one end so that they can be driven into the ground, they also have holes in a spiral fashion that go down about 1/3 of the way down. Just pound them into the ground and drive a nail through them into your cage. Hope this helps.

Oh I think I get it...are these like the ones that the cement guys use to make their forms for curbs and sidewalks? They seem to be like you are describing?
