Mountable feeder from WalMart!

Post by cindy » Tue May 31, 2011 2:36 pm

I went into WalMart for filters for our air conditioning system and came out with 5 feeders. I am going to mount these against the bars and place a bowl under it to catch hulls, knocked seed.

I have been looking for something like this and got 5 to try out, if they work well then back to WalMart for more...can't beat the price under $4.00 each!!!...WalMart better stock up, I'll need a case!!

I will Debbie, I know some of my birds will use them, other not. Maybe these will work better than the seed hoppers, which are sat on, pooped on and slept in.

I use these in my outdoor goldbreast aviary. These are the only birds I have found that they work well with.... Most of my other finches when offered a free feed will just take their beak and shovel it out in search of their favorite morsels :?
I removed the suction cup and replaced with a hanger and then hang against the wall.
Hope they work well for you... can't beat the price :D

I am goin to remove to remove the suction cup and use a zip tie since the top slides forward to refill. I may try this in the owl flight and Florida Fancy flight and the BC cages.

Same with my Zebras. My Societies, on the other hand eat what's on top but think there is no more food when there is a layer of hulls over the seed. For them I need more surface area so I don't have to remove the top layer of hulls every 5 minutes :)

I had seen them at Walmart recently, but figured that they wouldn't work for me.

This feeder has got to be better than the bowls I've been using! I'm going to town tomorrow and pick some up! I don't care if they kick the seeds out because 'someone' will always be hopping around eating off the floor anyway. They love to forage!

Truthfully I'm hoping these feeders will deal with most of the 'poop in the seed' problem. How did yours work Cindy? Did your finches like them? Did you like them?

Trish, the poop in the bowls is what gets me, some of the zebras do it and others do not. My shaftails are pretty clean and use both hopper and bowl. My Green singers use only a flat dish and will nibble pellets out of a hopper but mostly just stand on it. My older owls will use a hopper but prefer a flat dish as do the newer pairs.I mostly got these for the zebras since they waste seed and pellets, their are more in the tray uneaten or they are pooped in. I use the crocks for them, put it is discouraging throwing food out.

My BCheek zebras are the worst poop offenders, especially when feeding young, it is like they are filling up and depositing at the same time. Seed hoppers don't work well with some of the zebras, they see them as a spot to sleep or nest. The little section where the seed comes out gets soiled. Even giving them a cup of something is looked at as a seat/bed/toilet!!!

I have not put the feeders in yet and are debating to use them with a mix of pellets and seed or just seed and offer a cup of pellets.

I am reworking cages today moing birds around so the feeders will be put in today...we will see how it goes!!! I am sure they will find a way to poop in it somehow!!!

hi
its a wise move taking the suction cup and putting a tie on because they sometimes fail ,no matter how tight they seem and its a waste of seed, regards the husks left behind the birds just landing and taking off should blow them away without you having to go in and blow the husks off yourself

I am home and check the cage often so it there are hulls I can get rid of them. Most of the time they won't be eating over the little area the food/seed gathers, most likely wthey will stand up or tunrn so hopefully hulls won't be an issue. It is the poop in the food that bothers me. I can also mount these high enough so when they bathe the splashed water does not get into the food...it is always a case of reinventing the way we do things with these little guys!!
