I find my birds spill lots and lots of seed while picking through it to find what they want. This has compelled to to switch over to a pellet diet and offer seed more as a treat. I was also wondering if I could switch up the type of cups I use. I'm currently using the simple cups that hang inside the cage. I have seen other cages with cups that hang on the outside of the cage and would really like to use those but they cages that I've seen with them have flaps on their doors which open and close for the cups. None of mine have flaps, they just have a door that slides up and down. What are the best cups for these?

This is the outside feeder that I have on a couple of my cages....My doors slide up & down....I attach it with a small bungie to hold it tight against the cage, to make sure there is no chance of escapes....It works very well at eliminating the seed mess....It does take a little time before the birds are comfortable stepping outside the cage to feed....

Do they make those in a smaller finch/canary size?

Actually - I just use a gazebo-style feeder that is manufactured for outdoor use. It fills from the top with plenty of space/ledges for the birds to perch. And it costs about 6 dollars at Walmart : )

Took about a day for the birds to get used it - and I love it. It holds a lot of seed, and I add pelleted food as well. Don't have to worry about them going hungry for a couple of days at least.

I use the normal seed hoppers on the same type of doors.

I switched to feeding my finches in small terra cotta saucers on the cage bottom several years ago. They flip less seed out of the cage that way, and I just read on another post how the terra cotta helps keep the nails worn down some too.
