I want to make a newer, bigger aviary. I want to paint the walls, maybe paint some clouds, trees and grass/flowers with maybe some birds and a few birdhouses?? My question is that there is a window and a plug-in in the area. Any ideas what I can do with those? Can I just use those plugs for the electical plug-ins? What about making a 'framed door' like infront of the window? Then I can get in there to open/shut the window when needed?

Just looking for some ideas.

it would be wise to cover the plug-in if you have any exposed wires if you are thinking of keeping keets in the future as they will amke a lovely meal for them!regards the window painting over it with something like you have suggested,would be fine as you need to show the birds that the window is there as they can fly into the glass and break thier necks if they cannot see it

Nope, No keets in with the finches. Not wanting to paint the window, was talking about the walls. No sure what to do about the window but to put some kind of door infront of it???

I'm thinking of turning part of my bird room into an indoor aviary, and I have the same problem. It is a small room added on to the porch, and has windows on all three outside walls, plus a window on the brick outside wall of the house that looks into the kitchen. I'm thinking that if I made a wooden frame covered with wire mesh that fits flush with the window, I could then remove it when I wanted to open the window. The other option would be to build a wood frame with wire mesh that is bigger than the window opening, and then fasten it to the wall with hinges on one side, so I could swing it open in order to open the windows. I'd like to do the wire mesh over the kitchen window so about half of it would be hinged across, so I could swing it open from the kitchen, and have the feeding station right there. Just some ideas I'm having.

There would also be an electrical outlet, which I will use to plug in lights. I don't think it will be a problem with finches, but if you don't use the outlets, I would cover them with those baby-safe things. I like your idea of painting it to look like the outdoors--very nice!

Don't use the baby-safe plugs -- I'm betting even finches will be curious enough to pull at those. Just buy a plain wall plate and cover the outlet.

I like both ideas for covering the windows (flush w/ window or framing window on a hinge). I think it will look sharp. You could even do something similar with the door - make a "screen" door that matches the wire mesh window covering.

Take pictures once you have completed the project. I love seeing people's handiwork!

Get a screen door that's a wee bit wider than the window. Then attach a 2x4 to the wall next to the window and hinge the screen door onto that. Or you could hinge it right on to the window frame, but my mother's voice inside my head would never let me do that.
