Housing Waxbills

I've read a few times now about waxbills being able to get out of cages with 1/2" mesh.
What is the best kind of cage to keep them in?
What kind would be good for chicks?

My orange cheeks can get out of my flight which is 1/2" bar spacing if they really want to. They escape occasionally, but I always find them.

I think if you have 1/2" mesh, that would be enough, as now there is just a little square to get thru. The 1/2" bar spacing is more flexible, and some of the tiniest manage to squeeze thru. 1/4" mesh would be completely secure, but it is a lot more expensive than the 1/2" mesh, plus I wonder how it would affect visibility.

I would think the 1/4" would be tough to see through. hmm.
I wonder if you make their cages with more acrylic and mesh air vents..
I really can't let them escape as I have 2 cats and a dog that would be very willing to find them. yikes.

I'm going to Home Depot tonight to see if they have anything I can use to "reinforce" my 30x18x18 cage where I'm temporarily keeping two pairs of goldbreasts. They've already proven that they can pop back and forth through the divider of a divided cage, and I know they can get out of this if they try..... I'll let you all know what I find.
