A little Spice Can be Nice-What a Nest!

I could not find the thread about nest building by finches on their own, but I had to post this of our Spice finches nest. They built and added onto a canary style wicker nest using coco fiber and cotton fiber. They worked for about a week to get it like this. It measures six inches tall and four inches wide. Wow!

Wowwie! Talk about sleeping on a cloud! =D> =D> That's spectacular! Are you letting them keep it? It's a real work of Bob the Builder gone wild  =D>

We had to remove the nest because we had finches in that flight who were sick and we were not sure why, so we removed all nests, perches etc. and cleaned house all over! They are now in quarantine because one of the ones who made the nest has a blocked preening gland and needs daily compresses and meds. But, I'm sure they'll make another one when they are well.

I'm so sorry about your birds. I've been reading the posts but alas I don't have anything to offer as far as 'reasons' for their passing. I am very sorry to hear of your losses though and am hoping you don't lose any more. I know vets are so expensive and though you aren't supposed to put a price on pets, it's very frustrating to hear the results were neg. Our snake Little Niki blew up like a balloon last year and quit eating. We took her to a reptile vet and after doing numerous tests, X-rays to see if she was egg bound, she got a clean bill of health- we were told......
she has 'gas'. #-o The vet bill was hundreds. We had to give her a shot once a week and medicine by mouth every day. We're talking big snake- 7 ft. But she got well and is fine now. Gas... go figure. So I hope there isn't anything going through your aviary that will touch any more of your birds. Fingers crossed for you and your birds.

Thanks Trish. I know it is so expensive to try and care for our pets, but when we are told "nothing is abnormal" or they are fine, after spending hundreds of dollars, I just don't know about going. Yet, I'm afraid if I don't, I would regret it later. Hmmm. :?

OMG-tell me about the heat! My car read 123 degrees, before I turned on the A/C and it was in a garage!! That is how hot it is this week. The electric company has asked all customers to limit their use of nonessential electric items, but there is not much one can do, except turn off lights and unplug non-used items. We must have A/C, but I am still keeping my A/C at 78/79 (upstairs/downstairs units). Yet, I'd love to put it at 76, but that would cost an arm and a leg. LOL.

123? ? I heard about the electricity shortage too. If the power goes out everyone will be in big trouble with no AC! This morning I checked DFW weather and you're getting another week or more of 108 temps!!!! There's just something wrong with that! I hope it moves on soon! It's all too weird- up here we haven't had a summer. It's been cold. 4 months now of below normal temps. I didn't even have a garden this year. It won't stop raining. We finally got 3 consecutive days of 70's then today it's back to cloudy and 66. I know I shouldn't be complaining with the rest of the country melting but, dang.

I understand about rainy or cloudy days. I can't stand that at all. My mother is from Washington and she told me she is reminded of her childhood every time we get rain and clouds (which is not often here).
Even though the temp here is so high, I'm fine with A/C and popsicles. I love the sunny days, just not this hot. The last time I remember it being over 100's like this, I was in High School and was at a summer camp, which was not too cool to go out and do physical stuff in the heat when it did not involve swimming. LOL. Even the pool water is hot here, like a bath!

Just wanted to say this is a NICE thread. The way you two were chatting back and forth - like neighbours over the backyard fence. =D>

That's quite the nest too. =D> =D> I'll bet they'll get right back to it when given the chance.

Thanks. I love this forum because I can have these type of chats with several people from all over the country and the world. It makes the information sharing even more fun too. :D

Yes it does! I was wondering if 'chatting' was against the posting rules when I was asking about the weather since it was off topic.
