Housing Conundrum

I am in need of more cages. I have babies hatching all over the place and didn't even know it.

I have the 24 inch long divider cages with two in each. I'm told that's too small but the right size if I take out the divider for one pair.

I am tired from all the cages, cleaning, etc. I need a simplier way to do things. I don't have alot of pairs, but the babies are more than the parents. Oops, I goofed and two had babies and alot of them and I'm so glad they are alive, really. I love them.

I can't aford to buy expensive cages but this is the problem. Different cages everywhere. I need to have a more uniform caging system. Can anyone make suggestions regarding the cages only. A link, a size. The birds are inconsequential. I'm not getting rid of them because I don't want the work. I love it. I'm having a little money problem and need help in your wonderful imaginations. (I tried to build but, trust me, it's easier to buy). I need 4 cages to start. It would make it easier. I wish I could get one big one with 4 diviiders. But I'd settle for anything. Thanks. Lyn

If you look on eBay, you can find stacking breeding cages for a relatively small cost, they are always available so you don't have to worry about not being able to buy more when needed, I have seen them for as low as 80$ for six cages and stand.

I was going to suggest Craig's list and Ebay. Good luck! Otherwise you might have to get someone to help you build a larger flight or two.

Ebay and Craigslist are just distributors that sell for the same price as a store. Know this as a fact. Been an Ebayer for years and my best friends are distributors. Ebay is NO BARGAIN. At least at a store, you can return product. Ebay is a trainwreck when it comes to returns. Lyn

Lyn,
I am not sure how many finches we are talking about now and what money resources you have to get another cage system. That said, I am always on a budget, but found some flights that were a good price for what you get. Meaning, a large double flight cage with divider (60x30x 60) approximately. I can't remember the exact measurements. I ordered one online at BirdComforts.com The one I bought was the A & E Double Flight cage, which is similar to the more expensive version by HQ, but this one does not have the gap at the top of the doors. I like that so the finches don't escape. That cage cost about $250-280?? They offered free shipping with orders over $200, so that is your cost. For a flight cage, that can be divided into two 36x30x60 cages, that is a bargain in my humble opinion. If you do not need that much room, I would go with the stackable breeding cages, but at our bird marts they went for about five stackable with a stand for $120.00-150.00. I hope this helps. This is a link to the double flight. http://www.birdscomfort.com/doubleflight_bird_cage.html

I've found lots of good large cages on Craig's list. sold by private owners that no longer have birds. They are good buys. I meant ebay classifieds not the ebay sellers. That's a good find Deborah. Cages are fairly expensive (over 100.00) if you want a large one or a flight. I don't know if you can get around it unless you are lucky and find one at a garage sale which I know people have before.

Having built a few cages myself. Be careful, you may find out it cost you more to build it that to buy the commercial breeder cages. Plus it takes a lot more time to do. That is why I gave up building my own cages and switched to the commercial breeder cages. Picked up at a birdmart the price was reasonable.

The other thing is I cannot stack my homebuilt cages, as they do not have the rigidity to support a stack of cages, so I have to buy a shelf to put them onto. Whereas the commercial breeder cages will stack on top of each other w/o problem.

I checked out the two suggestions and have been looking for weeks. I just can't afford the cages. I'm sorry, but $40 for a 24 long cage with a divider. the birds can't move. Things sure have changed when I first did this 20+ years ago. Even the food is ridiculous in price. I think I'll just keep a pair or two and that will solve that. I'm disappointed. I really needed something to put a smile on my face. It's frowning right now.

You don't have an ebay in Canada? I am always on the one on the UK. Does that mean I can't buy from the uk? Is there a way to get you those cages, if you're really serious. We can work together. What do you say? Lyn

the problem is that u.s. sellers offer free shipping to the lower 48 states. but to ship to canada they want 90 bucks, and then duty and blah blah blah..

i have one specialty bird store here in my neck of the woods.
for a single cage like they ones you just bought the are 79$ + 15% HST

so either way i dont get a deal like you guys do.

if i drove a car, it would be worth while for me to get a p.o. box that your side of the border. as i am only a 20 minute drive from the bellingham border.

Are you telling me that if a family member in the states sent you a biarthday present, you would have all those costs? Ok, now I am going to see what I can do. It's the principal. I'm big on that as you get to know me. Lyn
