I have 2 male Goulds that I won't mind if either one pairs up with a female gouldian that I have. If I place the 2 males in with the single female in a cage that is 30" x 18" x 18" will I be asking for trouble when the female picks her mate?

I'd say yes. The males may or may not trouble themselves to fight over her, but I can't imagine that the pair would set up housekeeping with the extra male right there.

I have been told by experienced keepers that an extra male will stimulate breeding - but this was with more than three pairs and an extra - with only one pair it might be too concentrated / disruptive

This is good to know Sue. Just that the cage won't allow for so many birds. If I had a large flight cage I'll keep that in mind.

I read something similar somewhere - that if a male isn't acting interested sometimes a little competition will motivate him. Of course, you'd have to take the second male out as soon as the first made his move.
