With the onset of baby birds adding to my numbers, I am contemplating building an aviary. The question is location, location , location. I have read some posts regarding weather where they say the birds are pretty hardy. I live in Massachusetts, where the temps year round can vary usually from low teens to high 80's, with the occassional colder or warmer days.

I have three choices for location:

1. outside in rear yard which gets sun most of the day and can get hot with the sun reflecting off the white house siding. I know I can add shielding and shade for the birds, but would also need to protect them from neighborhood pets (cat lives next door)

2. In my cellar, where my kids room is now abandoned as they are long gone on their own, very little people traffic, actually none, but is dry and plenty of room for size.

3. In one of my kids real bedrooms which I know store things and where the birds are currently housed. This is next to my office where I spend 80% of my waking hours and actually have a web cam fixed on the cage so I can peek in when working in the office.

Any help or suggestions? I am anticipating my population to go from 3 Societies to 6 or 7, and my 2 Zebras to 5.

Personally I'd pick the bedroom. You'd be more likely to enjoy them, probably get more natural light, and shouldn't have issues with damp. My two cents!

I also vote for the spare bedroom, but I'm biased in that that's exactly what I did. I live in Missouri, where the weather drastically changes nearly on a daily basis (I kid you not I remember a year when I was a kid, I was outside playing baseball in 90 degree heat on saturday, and then bundled up and tossing snowballs on sunday!!!!)

I like that webcam idea, I'm going to have to look into that....
