your oppinion on cage size...

Post by Jossi » Wed Sep 07, 2011 7:10 pm

I would love to hear your oppinion on cage sizes. I did just build a new cage, but it dosnt hold all of my finches, I have a couple of cages here and there  I was thinking of building something in the future just for the goulds. And keep the other birds in the one I built or visa versa.

So how big would you go as a minimum for around 20 gouldians? I dont have that many today, but I wouldnt be surpiced if I got some more over the years

I dont have that mutch space, and outdoors isnt an option since we have realy bad winters and Im living in an appartment. So Im realy talking minimum and not some dream project  I am curently housing both female and male together... and I havent had any problem with that, infact I think all breeders I have been in contact with here in sweeden have housed both sexes together. Seams to be the common way around here.

And how many finches would you house in the cage I just built? The messurments are: 6 ft long, 2.5 ft wide and 6.5 ft tall.

I just want some inputs so I dont end up with something I would regret.

Thanks!

Jossi,
On the finch info center, there is an awesome calculator to determine how many birds could fit in a specific enclosure.
http://www.finchinfo.com/housing/cage_s ... ulator.php

The cage you built should comfortably fit 7-10 birds, depending on their level of aggression, and individual personalities, etc.

Remember for finches, the length and width matter much more than height, because they fly horizontally, though there are ways to get them to make more use of vertical space as well.
Hope that helps!

Thanks I will check that out :D
Thats about what I have in there today, and they seam comfortable
I dont have that agressive species, mostly goulds and a couple of canaries and societys. Oh and one little pest, the java finch Motoki  But he lost his partner some time ago and Im considering trying to find a new home for him... he is very adorable so its a hard call  But at the same time, I dont want any more javas...

I have come to turns with that I think its the goulds I want to keep. I started out with canaries and societys, but the goulds won my heart, so there will be no more canaries and societys for me... But I do get very attached to all of my birds, so I have a very hard time letting go of them... so I guess the ones I have will stay :D

But please keep your thoughts and oppinions comming, its always nice to hear what all of you guys think :D

In an apartment, you also have to make provision to take down the cage when you move. So don't make it too difficult to disassemble. You could also do a stacked cage, 1 on top and 1 below. That way you can have 2x as much horizontal flying space as 1 tall cage.

In designing my own cage set-up that I didn't think of the tear-down issue until I had already started building. I've since altered my plans slightly to be able to disassemble when we move.

Most times I use J clips in my cage makeing, but if I feel that I may have to take it apart later I like to use zip or cable ties that are much easier to remove later for knock down---they are actualy very strong and I will use a silver sharpie type of permanent marker to color them the same color as the wire. I find cage building very enjoyable and a good way to relax.
2 society, 2 zebra, 2 spice, 2 lady gouldians, and one very much loved african grey who i converse with much.

It is a very wonderful thing indeed, when you become friends with those that wear feathers and eat seed.
