moving birds between cages
moving birds between cages
I have 3 society finches, 1 in one and two in the other. I want to move them into a bigger cage so they have more room to fly, but im not sure how to do it without scaring them. any suggestions?

hi steve
take them to the smallest room you have ..doesnt have to be the toilet
make sure the widow is shut and covered so that if they get out they will not hit the glass cover your cage with a large enough cloth to cover the whole cage and wait a moment till they settle it should give you enough light to see into the cage by before you cover them take the perches out! put the cage at a hieght which is comfartable and then just put your hand in and they should be easy to catch as the slight darkness will quieten them down and the perches missing means that they can only land on the floor of the cage so you know where they are going to land instead of knocking your hands on the perches and them being able to fly up out of the way of your hand and land somewhere you acnnot reach i have done this plenty of times and have found it causes them least stress usually you can put your hand straight in and pick them up...make sure you have the cage ready where you are going to put them,so even if you have to carry them by hand to the cage it will not stress them too much society finches are quite hardy so i dont think any will die whilst you are doing this..but YOU will have palpitations if it is your first time
