If I converted correctly, that's approx 8"x8"X12". Sounds too small for any kind of bird to me. But I have no experience keeping either canaries or goldfinches. It seems inhumane to keep a winged animal in something that small on a permanent basis.
Maybe he was just trying to excuse the fact that he was keeping it in such a small cage.

That's not true, about it being scared and die.
That is a training cage that it was in.
Get it a nice sized canary or budgie cage and it will be fine.
Mine is in a canary cage that is about 20 in x 20 in x 13 in.
My bird is a little bigger than yours because mine is
Siberian goldfinch x Waterslager canary.
These are very hardy and long lived birds.
Their song gets better every year.
Mine is three years old and his song is fantastic.
Here is my bird and his father in the other cage.

I have a pair of canaries and they each have their own cage which is 30" long. They love to fly back and forth.

No he can't breed and I would keep him alone like mine.
Mules are more aggressive and could try and kill another bird.
He will try and breed at breeding season, but the eggs will not be fertile. Just keep him alone and enjoy his song.
