Reptisun, which?

Post by RustiAnkr » Tue Oct 02, 2007 11:38 pm

Howdy!
I want to get the proper lighting for my feathered kids and read that Reptisun is good, but which one? It comes in 3 sizes 2.0, 5.0 and 10. I would greatly appreciate your help! 8) I have a 36 X 36 X 18 cage. The current light sits on top, about 6" from the top and about 12-14" from the top pearch.

Birds don't necessary need UVB lights like reptiles, they should be fine if you just vitamin supplement.

Weird, but this is what it says on finchinfo.com:
Lighting should consist of either direct, natural sunlight (not through a window unless it is open, since glass filters out UV light)2 or a full spectrum light source which accurately mimics sunlight5
I supply mine with vitamins, does that mean I don't need to hunt for a full spectrum light?

If you want the happiest healthiest finches, I would get them the lighting. Especially if you have them indoors not near any type of natural lighting. Finches are much happier with the light.

As far as the type you are considering, I'm not sure. I use a different kind. But I do provide them with full spectrum lighting.

I use a Reveal Light Bulb in a simple reflector fixture. The Reveal say they are full spectrum, sunlight.
I have a 150W bulb over a 6' x 2' cage 4' high.
I think I actually need 2, but it is very light where it shines.

Along these lines, sorry to hj post...but my full-spectrum bird light burnt out. It was a regular light bulb socket kind, but I can't remember where i bought it and my husband already threw away the bulb. I had ordered it off of some bird site a year or two ago.

Anyone know where i can find one?

I'm not sure, but I think Ott-lites makes a regular socket type bulb for birds.

Thank you for all of the great feedback! I found where a Reptisun 5.0 is acceptable and we happened to have one on hand so That's what I'm using.
No hatchlings yet, but any time now 8)

The Reveal full spectrum light bulbs are regular light bulbs. I got mine at Lowe's.
