New to finches, is this cage acceptable?

Post by asher78 » Thu Oct 06, 2011 11:30 am

I acquired one finch and am being given 5 more tomorrow. This one that I got today came with a cage, but he is alone and everything smells bad as his owner was a very heavy smoker. ANYWAY, I am trying to figure out if I should try to integrate all 6 together or have two cages with smaller "flocks", first of all. All I know for sure about the 5 tomorrow is that one is a breeding pair as the other three are their offspring.

So if I should house them all together, would this cage be suitable for them? If I am reading correctly, the cage suitability says that it should cage 5-7 well.

If I should separate in to two smaller flocks, any suggestion on a decent cage? One big flock and cage is preferable to me, but I will do whatever is best for them. I will be ordered more stainless steel coop cages as well since I had originally only ordered two as I was just planning to have this guy.

Thanks so much!!! :-)

Hi Cindy,

I have the cage you posted. It's nice and roomy. I currently have 2 societies and 2 Blue Capped Cordon Bleus in it and they are all very happy.

I think as long as the birds you have get along with each other that the cage can house up to 6 birds with no problem. You said some were offspring of the others. You might want to consider a 2nd cage for the offspring or to be able to seperate males vs females. I'm sure others here more knowledgable than me will chime in and help with additional advice.

Fantastic looking cage/flight for 6 birds (or even a couple more) with no nests or nesting material IMHO. =D> And I love the pricing too. Nice find!

Thank you! Ordered it and paid for overnight so it should be here tomorrow. So exciting! :D And I cannot wait to get Oscar out of his stinky cage. Blargh! UPS just came with his stainless steel coop cups and Harrison's feed. I hope he likes it! Cleaned the nasty smoky smelling corn cob bedding out and put paper towels down.

It's here, they are in and they seem to LOVE it! Woot! I want to get more foliage. Right now I just have four bamboo sticks in there. I for sure want to get more. I have the hahn's ivy on top where they cannot eat it, just for decoration, but will move it if there is any possibility of them eating it. Also right now they have the pet store toys and such that came with them from the previous owners. Hopefully I can get a bunch of regular foliage and such and do away with those.

Will get a picture of what it looks like now once the sun goes down a little. :)

Thanks a bunch!

I recommend the dollar store, if you want to use fake foliage. They will poop on it, pull at it, and shred it, so you will be happier knowing you haven't spent loads of money on it! Just rinse it off and let it dry before you put it in the cage.

Oh, awesome. Will check that out until I can find more of the real stuff and/or to supplement the real stuff. I tend to have a black thumb and cannot keep any plants alive most of the time. *sigh*
