Providing Nests But Not For Breeding

Post by xTwilightx » Fri Oct 19, 2007 11:12 pm

Alrighty so there is a store near where I live called the Bird Shop. It's a great store for birds. We bought two Society Finches to add on to the three we got off craigslist. We asked about providing nests for the finches to sleep and rest in. They said not to because its bad to encourage breeding to just take the eggs away. I was wondering if this is true, that I should not provide a nest?

Thanks!

A lot of the time when you buy two societies from the same petstore at the same time, they are very likely to be related. They don't have to have a nest and would be perfectly fine sleeping on a perch. But, if you want to provide a nest you can, I would remove eggs though until you have pairs paired up that you know are not related.

I use nests with my societys but don't give them nesting material. The nests I bought were suggested to me by someone on this forum I believe. They are tubes and install slightly tipped down. The birds can lay the eggs but they fall out and you don't have to fight for them. I have found it worthwhile to use them for about the last year.
They are getting harder to find though. Can't remember my last source.
