I do have a question. We live in IOWA and do get snow here in the winter. The aviary is in the basement, will a space heater be okay and keep the birds warm? Anyone with advice would be helpful. Thank you.

A small space heater would be great!
I have a wall mounted electric heater, and keep it at a very low setting.
If it is too warm, the birds can go into molt and stay that way and get stressed out!
I had a canary that went into molt because it was too warm.
Finally had to kept him in a cool room to get him out of it!

Summer, just make sure the coils are not coated in teflon, ceramic heaters are good. I love the wall mounted ones. Check out Home Depot and Lowes.

Summer you can also create little warm spots for them to go to like with heat lams in different spots near perches. If you hang them over perches from the inside, make a matal mesh cage or box to insert the lamp into (give enough space between the mesh and the lamp to allow the mesh not to get hot). By encasing it in a wire cage(smallest mesh size) it will prevent the birds from accidently landing on the lamp when hot and getting burned.
