Aviary Advice

Post by BaceyBoop » Mon Dec 05, 2011 3:44 pm

ever since i got into finches i've fancied the idea of a nice aviary for them to reside in. i was at my mom's house the other day and she had me help her get some decorations out of the shed. as soon as i opened the door my mind started racing with ideas to convert said shed into a wonderful area for my birdies. i'm pretty inexperienced in this area and for the most part i'm just wishful thinking, so i'm looking for some helpful advice on the matter.
it's a pretty sizable shed (can't give exact dimensions til i go back over there  but let's say it's about 10 x 10) and my original idea was to open it up a bit (adding a window and/or sunroof and maybe a screen door instead of the large wooden one that's on it presently) and then simply relocate the flight cages i currently have out of the extra bedroom of my rented house and to the shed. i can only imagine my landlord stopping by! #-o
my mom and step dad are totally cool with the idea, so i decided to discuss it with my other bird loving friend. all he did was bring up reason why it's a bad idea  he did, however suggest that instead of just moving their cages (since i would only really be side grading them) that i should cage off areas of the shed and turn the shed itself into the cage instead of just housing cages. i guess i see his point.
so i would like any advice that i can get. move my cages or convert the shed to a cage? and what about modifications for windows and such? i don't want my birds completely closed up in a shed, but i do want them protected from the elements. the shed has electricity, so i'd be able to add lights and a heater and things of that nature. and what should i do about rodent proofing? i have big dreams, but i'm not quite sure how to convert them into reality. help!! :P

It all depends how handy you are...this was a previous set up of mine around that size split into cages and flights.
I designed it with plenty of light but with doors to enclose for the winter.
