So - my friend gave me the awesome idea of building an aviary of a bunk bed! What im not sure about, is what i should use to paint it (now it has a boring plain wood-colour). I was thinking about wood stain: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wood_stain. I have used it before and it looks very good - but can it be toxic for birds in some way to live in an area painted with that ?
I was also thinking about putting something over the wood stain to protect the wood from moisture - some kind of varnish maybe ?

What do you think is safe to paint an aviary with ? :P

If you plan on putting finches in the aviary, you can use any paint as long as it is thoroughly dried and aired out long enough after painting before you put birds in. You have to be careful if you put in birds that chew the paint, like parrots or budgies. Finches don't chew wood.

Walmart sells Tremclad paints that are made for children's furniture.
They are children/ animal safe.
I have used it for my cages, and all the birds are fine.

That's a good point that Jerry made. And low odor and children safe paints are also better for YOU, not only your birds. :-)
