No offense, but I hope this is a quarantine cage and short term only? :? I think we all know that round cages aren't ideal for birds, they need the longer cages to be able to fly instead of hop.

I do like these antique cages though, as ornamental accents with flower pots or fake birds in them. I am always on the lookout for one to hang in my aviary as feeding station. I'd just remove the door and maybe some bars for free access. But I couldn't get one yet that looked decent enough and not rusty. And some of them are outrageously expensive.

You still see canaries in this type cage. Having purchased a bird that was kept for a year in a too-small cage, I can say that their muscles atrophy, and they lose the ability to fly. The little fellow I bought never did fly well. I gradually moved him up to bigger and bigger cages, finally putting him in a large flight cage with other males, and he could never make it to the top perches. It was sad to watch him try and try, so I put him back in a 30x18x18. He could make it to the perches in that size cage, and he actually was able to fly a bit. Sadly, he did not live very long, I had him less than 6 months when I lost him.

That is a great idea, Ursula, to use these cages as decorative feeding stations! In many Asian countries, they have these small bamboo cages with lovely ceramic bowls, they could probably be used as feeding stations too.

IF you're looking to breed Strawberries they would need a single flight at the very smallest (minimum size) and double flights would be better.

I had Strawberries for a couple of years and 30x18x18 was too small for any successful breeding.

No, he is there for just a little while till I get another canary cage.
He will either go into a canary breeding cage that 30 inches long or in the aviary.

I worry about putting him into the aviary alone, without a mate!
Really, I don't know if he will be a trouble maker or get picked on by the other birds?

Actually the cage is not antique, just the glass water and food dish are!
It's metal wire and plastic base, I bought it at Petsmart for $22.00

I use it to transport and or separate birds for cage cleaning.

Fingers crossed all goes well!
I put the Strawberry in the aviary with everyone else!
Let's see if he is a trouble maker or lives happily ever
after with his new found friends?

He won't be a troublemaker at all, Strawberries are really very passive. You may have to watch the others in the aviary to make sure they don't pick on the Strawberry.

Hopefully I will have another male in a few days to keep him company!
His brother will be coming to live with him!
They can watch each others back! [-X

I agree! My strawberry finches are the joy of my aviary. They NEVER bother anyone and I haven't noticed anyone bothering them. They hang out together and are so sweet. Looking forward to giving them a new girl on Saturday!!!

I know he is happier to be out of the small cage and having more room. Kudos to you!!! =D>
