Hi Gaz
I used red aggregate on the floor. I cant use bark chips here because of the humidity in the tropics. It gets too much fungus in it. Also it wont dry out because we have such a long wet season of between 4-6 months. The red aggregate is a mined stone (20mm) which also has the added benefit of naturally trimming long toenails, which is a problem in orange breasted wax bills, particularly. The aggregate drains very well and I laid it to 300 mm so that the snakes and white tail rats( big problem up in the north) cant get through it, (anyway that is the theory). We also have a big problem with butcher birds ( a big predatory bird) also in this neck of the woods so most outdoor aviaries have to take that into account by having sheltered escape areas for the finches. I have constructed an escape hatch into a fully sheltered area where they can rush to when the butcher birds bomb the aviary. On the floor, I laid down wire first then put the agg on top. I also rodent bait very heavily and fortunately haven't had any little creatures hanging around yet. Aggregate is a fairly inexpensive product, easy to put down and very easy to keep clean. The breeding section of the aviary, attached to the extension has hay on the floor, which gives a soft landing to chicks falling out of the nest. I will post some new pics when it is finished. Anything else you want to know?
