Well, there will be no more wire bottom cages at my house. Not after yesterday. Maybe by visiting FinchForum on a regular basis, I'll be able to avoid nonsense like this a little more often.

Zebra baby, first day out of the nest, slips both feet between the wires (on the floor), and is dead the next time I check. He was suspended in the air. Of course, this is one of the chicks I've been waiting so eagerly to see how they finish. Three in this clutch with interesting genetics.

I've removed the wire bottom on both cages I have like this now. The birds can run on the floor, like all the other cages, as of today. Live and learn.

I'm so sorry this happened to you, and it is just one of the reasons I don't like wire grates and remove all of mine. One thing those who do have grates can do, especially when they have babies in the nest, is to place a small dishtowel or similar over the grates, which prevents the baby from getting hung up.

I remove mine immediately...young birds don't need hazards.

Ive never liked wire bottoms either. I always remove mine.

I'm so sorry to hear about the baby. I place paper towels over the grate for the finches to walk on and for easy clean up.

I take the white plastic mesh and cover it in paper towels and use the across the bottom for thos with young. When dirty I just pull it out and add recover it in clean toweling. I am thinking of removing the grates in all my cages, they are attached and do not pull out and difficult to clean.

All my cages have the wire grate attached and I hate it. Makes them so difficult to clean really well. I am thinking about just removing them and using cable ties to hold the cages together.

So sorry to hear about our baby....So sad....I cover the bottom grates with rubber shelf liner cut to size....It is soft and easily cleaned....It also eliminates cleaning the grates....All they need is a wipe every now and then.....No babies falling through!
