Made Some More Changes...

Post by PrettyBird » Fri Jan 27, 2012 6:18 pm

Well it was cage cleaning day, and in the midst of it, I decided to switch birds into different cages.

I put the Gouldians in pairs in 2 seperate cages up in my bedroom.

I moved the green singers to the flight (used to be for my gould pair) and I also put the little GBWs in the flight as well.

I put in some new greens and branches. Wow they really are loving it in there. They have been getting along great. The GBWs are so active exploring their new home. GS are busy eating eggfood all is great :)
Another good thing about this is I dont have to worry about the GBWs squeezing through any 1/2" bars ;)

Heres some pics of the GS/GBW in the flight.

It looks really nice. It looks like the food is on the bottom of the flight - will your GS go there? Mine don't want to go even to the bottom half of their flight (40"h x 30"w x 20"d).

Thank you very much everyone :) Im loving this. Its made everything 10 x easier. Less cages in the house, less mess in the flight..ahh. They are also in my living room so its great to just sit and watch them.

Kathy- yes my green singers are used to eating on the bottom. Lucy always did this, but the male he was a little afraid at first. I put some millet down there and after a few attempts he got over his fear and theres never been an issue.

Same with the GSWs they arent afraid either.

Maybe if you are looking to put food on the bottom you could try putting some paper towel down (if you have a wire grate) they could be afraid of the way the bottom looks. And gradually move the food dishes lower and lower down the cage till they finally eat down there.

I'm mostly interested in getting my GS pair to use more of the space they have. They are really the little athletes. For hours at a time on sunny days they are in constant motion flying from perch to perch, stopping just momentarily to get a bite to eat. But it's like there is an invisible line mid-flight that they won't cross. I'll try gradually moving their food dishes down lower and lower week by week until they get over their phobia.

It seems like they have a built-in memory from their wild ancestors that perched up in trees. I think they feel safe when nothing can swoop down on them. One day when I happened to be sitting near their flight I heard the male make the little low squeak that means "trouble" and the two of them just froze. They had heard a cawing sound from a large crow that had flown near the window by their flight. They were like 2 little GS statues for a few minutes .....

Kathy- Good luck, I hope it works for you :)

My little GS male is eagerly trying to impress Lucy with his nest building capabilities. Hes made the nest and went down to the bottom of the cage grabbed a bit of coco fiber from the pile down there in his beak, flew back up to the perch were Lucy was, stood upwright and puffed up his chest fluttered his wings and chirped his little heart out :-"
Hes so ready to mate...her?...well shes getting there.
She will feed him and he feeds her, but I havent seen them mate yet in this cage. Hopefully this space will make HER happier! Hears hoping.

Less than 24 hrs in the flight cage and the gold breasted waxbills are mating!!!
Haha they are wasting no time. I went to feed them this morning and with in 5 mins of the food being there, they were ont he bottom of the cage mating.
Last night I seen him in the nest making what sounds like a melodic grasshopper, calling to the female to come in. She jumped right in and they were in there for quiet some time.

very nice! I was also wondering if that is the plastic mesh. I agree the singers are much more happy and enjoyable in a large flight or aviary. Mine right now are in a 24 x 18 x 18....and built a nest, however when the goulds are weaned I am gonna do some re-arranging. Very pretty, they should be happy in there.

My GS bred better in a breeder cage, but prefer to live in a flight. I have that plastic pvc mesh for my outdoor aviary. Looks nice!

Dante- Its a very sturdy plastic mesh. I got a roll of it at home depot. I dont know the exact square size on it...maybe 1/4" or something.
I built this flight in the summer, it was origionally for my napoleon and orange weaver. But once i joined this site, I found that its not good to pair them with aussie finches that I wanted to get. So thats when I rehomed them and got a pair of gouldians.
They were in this flight until recently where I switched them out in pairs in cages and put the singers and GBWs in here.
This flight cost me about $60 to make.

I cant believe how much a difference it has been on the singers and GBWs. they building nests, mating like crazy! Im glad they are happy!
