What about chiggers? They can live in the moss especially if it's on the ground. Their bite is nasty!

I was thinking the same thing - I grew up in Northern Florida where the stuff is everywhere and learned at a very young age not to touch the stuff because it was always crawling with biting mites and other nastiness... :-@

We don't have much moss down this far south but I spend time on Jekyll Island in Georgia and it and chiggers are everywhere.

You can heat or sun dry the moss to rid it of bugs, this is what they do to make it the decorative moss for sale in craft stores. Though you still need to be careful with this type of material because it acts like a sponge. The liguid waste from the chicks will wet it and you can have mold and mildew problems, both can cause illness.
