gouldian behavior

Post by william » Tue Feb 07, 2012 3:39 pm

as i sitting here my male Gouldian its singing away , with the Famale sitting on the eggs almost a week now, some times it goes on for a while. does this means he wants to mate again and probably toss the babies like he did last time? :(

I don't know.
Some males will help SIT on the eggs, others let the hen do all the SITTING.

All you can do is keep an eye on the cage as often as you can around scheduled hatch date. I look for a small squigly pink blob on the far side of the cage from the nest...that would be a tossed chick.

Then have a plan for what you are going to do w the tossling.
Will you put the tossling back into the nest, will you foster the tossling (and if so do you have societies ready to foster them), will you hand feed the chick, or will you let the chick die?

William, I've had the same problem with my male Gould and have asked my self the same question before, but their is no sure way of proving that these two are related. Although my Gouldian sits and incubates the eggs religiously without a problem he also likes to sing while the female is in the nest and eventually when the egg hatches he tosses the chicks :(. This is the 3rd time he has done it, hopefully your male behaves and takes his duties as a father and raises the chicks. Good luck !!!!
he sits on the eggs as soon as his turn comes up. but he starts making all this mating singing while she's in there. he was doing this last time when the baby was around 10 to 12 days old (i can't remenber exactly right now) but now his doing it this soon.:(

Most of my male gouldians sing all day long, I don't think it has anything to do with whether they will toss chicks or not. Even when not breeding they sing.
