I put a 20 dollar automatic cat water fountain in my aviary as a bird bath. It didn't take long at all for them to figure it out. I figure this is better than a dish with water as it won't be prone to building up algae as fast as standing water does.

Whatever gets them to take a bath is good with me.

I use the Drinkwell. It has a deeper bowl so I've had to put some rocks in it. My bird goes for the water as it comes down. Its more like a shower instead of a bath. But I can't run it for too long because the sound of water splashing makes him sing like crazy.

I just bought a water fountain for my cats, and was thinking along the same lines. However, the one we have just has a thin filter in it and I was worried about it not filtering the water well enough for the finches to drink. As well as it being awkward to clean routinely.

How often do you clean it? and/or completely change the water?

With the filtering system, do you think it is still okay to add Apple Cider Vinegar to their water?

(For cat lovers: We bought the fountain because our senior cat, who we adopted last summer, kept racing to drink the toilet water. The fountain works perfectly, in that she no longer tries to drink the toilet water.)

I think there's always going to be bird poop in the water, no matter what, so the water should be changed every day.

I never leave my fountain running in the cage unattended. It's only for a few hours of fun, and not everyday because I have to clean it and dry it each time, so it's a bit of work. Also I don't rely on the built-in filter. I pour in filtered water. If I was using it for a dog or cat, I would also change the water every few hours. I had a desktop decorative fountain but it was really hard to clean.

just bought one and birds seems to love it!
