Diapers for my cages

Post by finchandlovebird » Fri Mar 02, 2012 4:01 pm

I've been pretty disgusted these past couple weeks with the mess from my 3 flights. I have carpeting in the sunroom/computer/bird room so it's really a mess. I just couldn't stand it anymore.
In a post a while ago, one of our regulars said she used a bedsheet on her cages; so I tried that with clear, plastic shower curtains. It's "clothespinned" to the back of the cage more than halfway up the back; then it's brought under the cage & "clothespinned" up in the front about 4" so the cage doors still open.
OH MY GOSH, IT'S A MIRACLE! Hardly any mess at all anymore; it all stays in the "diaper"!!! =D> =D> =D> =D> And being clear plastic, it hardly shows at all!

I do the very same thing but use zip ties, works great, just remove, swap out a new one and wash the dirty one. I use the PVC free one that are clear, inexpensive at WalMart or Target.

Well, the title was certainly an attention grabber.

I need to do something like this, except most of my cages are on a solid surface.

Cage diaper!

I would be interested to see a pic if possible. It is a battle keeping up with mess on carpet. I currently have fleece strips cut about 12" wide. then I wrap it around the bottom circumferance of flight just like a seed guard and hold with clothespins. It has helped alot but I think it could be better, the fleece is stretchy so I can just pull it down to get in door. I am always trying to think of something better that still looks nice...how does the shower curtain look?

I'll take a pic tomorrow. It's great, 'cause you can hardly see it.

I use the holes at the top of the curtain to slip a zip tie through to secure it to the cage. Cut to size and use a bit of clear packig tpe, a hole punch to create a hole to secure the liner to the bottom and sides.

I clip sheet plastic to the side then around the back and the other side. This covers 3 sides of the cage. This has kept their poop off the walls, furniture and floor. Zebras "shoot" their poop out, not drop it down like other finches. My wife says the poop on the plastic sheet is disgusting, and it is, but it is on the plastic sheet and not the walls or furniture.

The plastic also contains water splash when they bath. Their bath is an outside hanging bubble, so water can only splash back into the cage where the plastic contains the splashing.

The only way I have found to control light stuff (feathers and millet hull) is to use krinolen over the front of the cage. But I can never get it all and I still have to clean under and around the cage.

Thanks for the pics, Dolly. Always good to have a visual. I can do this for one of my cages at least that's on a stand. :D

I ordered a full undercover cloth cage seed guard from this lady on ebay. She was very easy to deal with and had it here quickly. The guard does not let ANY seeds get on the floor b/c it goes all the way under the cage. It looks store quality! Here is a link to one of her sales on ebay if you are interested. I do not know her personally, but have 2 of her covers that I had specially made for a flight cage and another cage. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 500wt_1192
