simple DIY cage..
I had left over hardware cloth from building my chicken coop. I used the 1/4 in galvanized. The roll I had was 4ft wide x 25ft long (around $55). I had a few feet left over and needed a temporary cage for my OCW's. I simply rolled the hardware cloth into a nice cylinder, and covered the ends with the excess. John from the forum gave me the idea...He has used hot water heater trays to cover the ends. The cage is 4' wide by about 16'tall and deep. I plan on making a bigger model of this as well. I used zip ties to hold everything together. You could also use the metal claps or wire. Be careful when using the hardware cloth as there may be sharp edges that need to be covered. I use newspaper in the bottom of the cage and it curves up with the cylinder shape and helps keep in any thrown seed. Let me know what you think. I could make about 5 cages from one roll of cloth....thats a good deal!

Re: simple DIY cage..
great question Liz! I have my partner stand on one side of the cage so the babies go to the other.....where I'm waiting
I also cut out a little divider out of cardboard. I just wedge that in there to keep them on one side.

I think one of the many great things about your invention is that it could be easily moved. I'd like to move my flight cage outdoors on sunny weekend afternoons but even with casters it is just too heavy and awkward to take up and down even a couple steps. Put a handle or two on the top of your flight and it could be moved like a duffle bag, right? Maybe your invention could be suspended at a couple points to a sturdy tree limb, for outdoor use.
Just thoughts. Great idea!

Thats a great idea. The deck comes off the second story of my house, and I have considered hanging these cages from underneath the deck through the summer months. It is VERY light weight and can moved easily with a handle.

That is the neatest idea....you are really thinking 'outside the square box' on this cage!

Re: simple DIY cage..
All you need is a good pair of wire cutters. Gloves may not be a bad idea.... The hardware cloth can really scrape you up if your not careful

Nice... and economical. I have seen those made and hung from wires outside. Also have made them verticle and round. using a dish to inset the base in and placint another dish on the top inverted.
Here is one Johnboy made and the ends were tins. check his out

Clever and thrifty cage idea.

You spin the cylinder until they're a bit disoriented then you reach in and pull out a winner.L in Ontario wrote:Looks terrific! How do you catch a finch in there if you have to?
