I am going to be purchasing 4-6 dividable 30x18x18 cages soon and have a question.

On some of the units, it says slide out dividers - ok, I get how these work but on some of them it just says removable dividers. I was assuming these were the same way but on one ad, it said you could quickly remove them with "tools". Now I'm wondering how these "removable" ones actually work. Do you need screwdriver to do these? If so, I'd imagine it's a big deal to do while the birds are in the cage without freaking them out.

I'd like to purchase something that I can easily divide if needed, while the birds are in the cage. I plan on trying to pair up some zebras and want to be able to slip the divider in or out at a moment's notice. I'm thinking allow them some together time each day and if they get aggressive, pop the divider in for a few hours until everyone calms down. Hopefully they can get used to being together and they can have lots of flight space and I can get rid of my NINE individualized cages for them....ugh!

If you post a link to the website selling/displaying the cages with dividers we may be able to suggest which would be more appropriate.

I don't know of any cages that you need to use "tools" to insert or remove the divider with. I just slip my dividers in or out as needed. Some cages have guiderails for the dividers to slip in between and some cages don't have anything - you just pop the dividers in. All my dividers have little bar extensions that go through the back end of the cage for stability.

Like Liz, all my divided cages use a solid wire divider, just like the side of the cage, that slides in a rail from the front to back of the cage. A couple dividers have an inverted L shaped hook that will hook onto the back of the cage. That keeps them more securely in, so you don't accidentally pull it out. But even those do not require a tool to remove. I just reach in and lift the back of the divider so the L hook comes above and then off the wire of the cage back.

One thing about birds and sliding a divider into the cage. With several birds in a cage, I found it HARD to get the birds you want on each side of the divider. Usually, they move in mixed groups, and thus the birds you want on the left is with the birds you want on the right. I end up dividing the cage with most of the birds on the side they should be on, then catching and moving the bird(s) that is on the wrong side to the side it should be on.

As for zebras, you better hang on to the cages. I found that my zebras just NEVER got along in a group environment of 6 zebras. The FIC says to have either 2 or 6 or more in a cage. Although I did not have a BIG cage, so they did not have lots of room for their own territory. I can validate that odd numbers are bad, the odd bird out get picked on. Because of the aggression/fighting, I had to separate the zebras into pair cages and a few into solitary confinement. It was a chore to juggle birds around trying to find a combination with the least aggression. And some just did not get along with anyone, those went into solitary confinement.

And a warning. I had a couple pairs that got along fine, then one day one bird turned on the other, to an untimately fatal ending. So don't count on "buddy" pairs (both MM and FF) staying buddies. You have to monitor them.

Maybe the tools were just for the initial set up? I'm purchasing 6 cages via Ebay (they are brand new though) so I assume they are going to be shipped where I have to assemble them. I turned out to go with ones that were labeled slide out wire dividers, as the bars were 7/16 instead of 1/2 inch.

At this point, I'd be happy to pair any of them up! I don't mind at all carrying for many birds but the number of cages is becoming a chore quickly. I don't know how successful this will be either. Sometimes I think I should just sell or give away some of them but I'm so afraid one of them will end up as snake bait. Especially since they would be so low priced or free. If it was an expensive bird, I wouldn't worry so much as I doubt anyone would pay real money to feed to a snake or something. I love these little guys to death - just wish they were more sociable with other birds. Even 2 to a cage would be great - as it is now, I have 9 solo birds.

Okay, put a male in each cage, slip in a divider, put a hen on the other side of each. Let them hang out, observe, remember it takes a while for them to accept each other, who ever hits it off sticks together!!

One thing I'd add is that I have the 30 x 18 x 18 ones and the birds can climb over the top of the divider. Was very disappointed that they didn't really work. I will have to find a way to twist tie them in or something - but then I wonder if they will get through underneath.

How you all manage over there with those daft all wire cages I don't know..it's a miracle how you manage to clean the cages and sort the birds out without giving them heart attacks.

None of my wire divided cages have a problem w birds sneaking over or under. The only divider cage that I have had problems w the birds sneaking over/under is my homemade cages, where I could not get the divider high enough. This was due to a limitation in how tall the divider could be to get into the front of the cage. I fixed that problem w a piece of cardboard taped to the top of the cage that blocked the gap.

Those are beautiful! Either I didn't see them or they were more than I wanted to spend. I also bought my new ones from Cageworld. I decided to go with 6 of them; came to $258, which seemed like a decent price. Supposed to ship between the 13th and 19th. Can't wait. I'm going to Las Vegas/Grand Canyon on the 25th, so am hoping to get all the birdies rehomed before I leave. My daughter will be bird sitting.
