Hello,

I want to buy a young male hyper active European Gold Finch.

I am told that I need to get him a small cage to put in for a while until he is tamed and calmed down...is this true? any idea?

What's the reasoning behind forcing a hyper active bird into a tiny cage? I don't believe you can force-tame a bird that way. That just sounds overly cruel to me - you might crush his spirit that way.

I would say put him in the BIGGEST cage possible. But that's just me.

Like I said, I want to buy a Gold Finch, so I'm actually new to raising Gold Finches - the reason for the small cage was that's just how I have been told to settle the bird down and so it starts to feel comfortable with the "new environment" and starts to sing...

I dont know if this is all correct - I suppose this is why I need the help of experts here in this forum...and the reason behind my posting...

So I would really like the support of expert Gold Finch keepers/breeders with this, so that I make the right judgement and make the correct moves

I would really appreciate all comments and help...

I have heard the same as well about how to get song birds settle down in a new environment.

I agree with Liz! My euro goldfinch is a very active flier and is constantly zipping around in my aviary (11 by 11 feet). I think it would be cruel to put him in a small cage.

But I'm sure some "traditional breeders" will disagree. For me something doesn't count just because it has been done a certain way for decades or centuries. I think of the animal as a living being who enjoys life as I do, and not of an object. I wouldn't want To have to live in a tiny cage either. JMHO.

Is the goldie that your getting is it cage bred,aviary or wild caught?
If wild caught, put him in the biggest cage that you have and give him a little cover, give him some time and he will settle down for you

The bird is a wild caught one - very lively and attractive - I really want to buy it, but dont know how to treat it

when you say cover the bird, do u mean put a cloth over the cage for a while?

I started out with wild caught goldies also, I put artificial greenery in their flight and left them alone for 1 year meanwhile, I mixed my own seed blend for them and as much wild seed that I could find around my lot( they love dandilion greens and seed heads in the milk stage) actually any seeds in the milk stage especially when rearing young. Give them time and they will settle down for you.Just relax and enjoy them for now, later on if you want you might put them in smaller cages and tame them using the feed. You have to be careful with them, they are prone to cocci( most of the time caused by stress). I always keep sulfa drugs handy for that reason. If you see them fluff up, get them under some heat and give a sulfa drug. Today I spent better part of the day picking dandilions for their seed mix. I feed mine a rich diet.This is how I do it, and it works for me.

Q, you can purchase it at any feed supply store or pigeon supply house. Try in mid west-- seigels pigeon supplies, in the east-- foy's pigeon supplies and in L.a Jedd's pigeon supplies. A good one to get is esb3 from vita king products$$$ in Indiana
