Community cage ?

Post by flygirl » Fri Apr 27, 2012 8:25 am

I have recently acquired a rather large cage that I paid $200 for.....measures. 36" wide. 27" Deep. 54" tall. I'm undecided on what breed to purchase. Here in Ct the selection of birds is beyond pathetic. I currently have a few Zebras & 1 canary but what I would like is to have a community cage with a few different breeds. I'm open to suggestions.......or maybe just resell the cage.
Zebras - Frank (normal Gray male) , Beans (Fawn female) , Peaches (Fawn female), Lamar (male CFW), 1 Gloster Canary , 1 disinterested Cat

Society finches breed easily, they also foster, so they are a natural choice. African Silverbills also breed easily in warmer climates whereas my Grass finches tends to breed later in the summer when the temperature cools a little.
Diamond Sparrows breed readily.
The Gouldians abandon the nest quite easily if disturbed so you will have to point their nest opening away from your staring gaze otherwise they may abandon the nest.
The Star Finches are a little bit temperamental and needs a lot of extra attention so if you are looking to start I would suggest Zebras, Bengalese (Society) and Diamond Sparrows

Are you looking to move your zebras in the new cage? if so, plan carefully which species you'll mix. Zebras can be very territorial, and aggressive. Stay away from goulds or societies with them; those birds will probably get picked on by the zebs.

If you're starting a new cage with all new birds, then the door's wide open! decide first if you plan to breed, many species become aggressive when brooding. if you're not breeding, same sex pairs are probably best. if you haven't visited the finch information center link on the left, there's lots of good info about what types of birds get along and the care they need. great pics too to get you interested!
4 zebras Crystal, Beau, Bella and Dmitri (the little squeaker), 2 societies Diva and DJ (and their 6 adult kids), and 2 green singers Thor and Regina

Have you checked out Hoobly.com in CT to see if there are any Finch breeders advertising? I saw some in your state depending on just where you are in CT.

Also you could try this link http://www.ebayclassifieds.com/birds/ and just put in your state.

I hope you can find some nice Finches for your cage and enjoy them. :D
