outdoor cages/ zip wax

Post by mitch » Mon May 21, 2012 1:27 am

years ago i had made a small outdoor flight out of galvanized wire, well i had to get out of birds for awhile because of work requirements.
i ended up just letting the cage sit for five or six years, after which it became very corroded--am just wondering if maybe i had washed it once in awhile with a carwash/wax at the same time maybe when i was outside washing the car if it would have prevented it from rusting, the cage had wooden components to it that were getting in bad shape so i just ended up getting rid of the cage. but my question is has anybody ever tried the zip type of wax on out door cages to prevent corrosion of the wire?

It is a very wonderful thing indeed, when you become friends with those that wear feathers and eat seed.

I personally would not use it on anything meant for a bird. It is a wax and leaves a residue or coating that could be irrating or make the birds ill.

I have a galvized pan, I clean it by soaking in a bit of bleach and water and a rag. You could scrub it down with a stiff wire brush or use a fine sand paper to remove the rust, rinse and sun dry. To protect the wire you can use a safe (for use on childrens furniture) spray paint to coat the wire.

They also make plastic coated wire mesh which is used by many of our members.
