Hello!
I have two conures that have been in the same cage for some time now, and my other cage is starting to look empty and lonely. I had thought about another parrot but I don't think I can manage a third bird that is out with me all the time when I am home. Remembering a beautiful aviary I saw at a local garden store full of cute finches, I thought this might be a nice solution.
The cage I have is this:
http://www.wayfair.com/AandE-Cage-Co.-P ... C1048.html
It is 32" wide and 21" deep, and the bar spacing is 1/2". It is the largest cage I could find with small bar spacing.
I have been hearing all sorts of things in terms of sizes. I checked the calculator provided in a sticky on this forum which indicated that the cage could house 2 to 3 finches. To be honest, I was hoping to have a few more than that, maybe 5 or 6 with no intentions of breeding. In part for appearances (more colours, more singing, yadda yadda) but also because 2-3 just doesn't seem like enough to be a happy group, and it seems like a good recipe for bullying (2 vs 1).
So, what are your thoughts? Think I could go up to 4? Or maybe if they were pairs it would be easier? Is the cage suitable with 1/2" bar spacing?
Will this cage do?

Nice cage. I think it's going to depend on which finches you choose to put in there. It's a great idea to house just males or just females to prevent breeding. Personally I would go with the males for their color and no risk of egg binding.
All male gouldians would be a good choice because they are so calm. I would think 4 or 5 male goulds would be fine as long as there was no breeding going on. Society males would be another good choice. Was there a particular breed you were interested in?

No, no particular breed yet. Some of them I find prettier than others but I have to do more research on individual species

Until very recently, I had that cage, with four zebras in it. There were occasional squabbles, especially at evening roosting time, but for the most part okay. If you go with a less pushy species than zebras, I think you would be fine with four birds in there.
Do let us all know what you fill it with!
