Diamond doves?
Would Diamond doves do okay in a small mixed aviary?
I may leave my male Zebras out.Just put in the females(would that work?)
Im thinking Diamond doves, society finches, a single pair of gouldians and maybe the female Zebras.Would that work well in a small aviary on the porch(3x6ft or so)?? Any other suggestions for any easy going mid priced finches or small birds(nothing too rare, expensive or hard to find)?
I really want to put this together. It may take a year or two to get it how I want it though.

Re: Diamond doves?
Diamond doves are great in the fact that they keep to themselves and don't directly bother the finches. The males can bother each other or pester young males once they are weaned. This can frighten the birds. They also have larger more obvious poops that smell worse than finches. I had them for a very short time and liked that they bred easily.

Re: Diamond doves?
I've had forbes, gouldians, javas and owl finch in with diamond doves without any problem. The problem you may have is the other birds bothering the doves, I'd just keep an eye on them till I was sure they'll be ok.
good luck

Re: Diamond doves?
I thought Javas were more aggressive like Zebras? Ive seen a few Javas on craigslist.

Here's the Finch Information Center's page for species profiles:Sasha2 wrote:I thought Javas were more aggressive like Zebras? Ive seen a few Javas on craigslist.

says java's are "Passive, but too large to mix well with other passive species". Just my personal experience, I didn't have any problem mixing them with owls, gouldians and forbes.

Re: Diamond doves?
I think the societies, gouldians, and diamonds would bea good mix. Javas are large but peaceful. Just add plenty nests so the societies do not hog them. I was thinking of getting a pair of diamonds, then thouht against it, but I see pairs at petsmart alot, so cute.

Re: Diamond doves?
Thanks, I saw a place that had Societies for 20 dollars a piece.I may get a pair in a few weeks.Im worried I wont get a male, female pair though.I guess there is no way to tell them apart.
Then in a month or so get a pair of diamonds. The pet store has pairs for 50 bucks.
Seems a bit expensive but I havent found them anywhere else.
Gouldians are the most expensive so they will have to be the last I get.
Plus I have to have winter quarters in the house, so that means I need either build an aviary in the attic(its finished but unused and stays warm enough in winter, 50's or so).Or buy some small inexpensive cages to separate them in pairs.
This is going to be fun.
