Sleeping Arrangements

Post by nofred » Sun May 27, 2012 10:29 pm

I just wanted to share a bedding tip for the true finch geeks! I know that by leaving beds in my aviary the fighting never ceases. So I came up with this: http://www.harborfreight.com/20-piece-p ... 41949.html
I cut the hanging brackets so I could spread them out around the cage. I found that a large pack of cheap dinner knapkins make for good liners. I unfold one, just once (double layer), then roll it length-wise to make a "paper cord" and put it in first. Then take another knapkin and lay it on top. That kind of gives them the nest "feel". Cheap & easy to clean. Take them out every morning and put them back up every night. NO fights! My Zebs seem to be happy and safe sleeping like this. It also works with breeding and gives the new family a bit more room to share.

Interesting idea! You should post a photo of what you did with this for your finch friends. :)

They don't change boxes too often, that's why I numbered them. I got some pics today.

And here are two of the latest brood of three trying to take an afternoon nap! They have already fledged and started pecking seeds & millet. Notice how these boxes can hang in horizontal bar cages very nicely too!

thanks. It was a midnight brainstorm. At first I had them lined up on a 2x2 that I hung from a deck joist hanger and a loop of wire, so that I could take them all out in one shot. But they got too hard to handle. Now I just stack them as I take em out!
They wash real easy as well. Sure beats trying to get the poop out of those wicker nest baskets!
