so my question is what size cage will i need for a hen and a cock to have enought space to fly about and would be confertible to breed and maybe keep some of the young in in the winter

I have my YF Stars in a 28x18x28 cage for breeding. They do fine and join the others in the larger flight when not breeding.

I think the stars will do well any standard breeding size cage.
Mine do not fly around like my other finches in my flight cage; they prefer the parts of the cage with the most greenery.
Best of luck to you! I plan on pairing mine up again in the next few weeks in a 30x18x18 cage filled with plant and nesting material.
