So i'm in the process of revamping a kitchen hutch into a flight cage. It seemed a little daunting at the first thought...but things have been going well.

First I bought a cheap old hutch off of Kijiji (unfortunately they didn't measure the moulding...so we had to sand the sides until it fit into our space).


Not the preetiest thing ever. But potential!

Next we removed the side glass, hardware and gave it a spray painting.


Already it is a huge change. Next I need to install the screen on the two sides, put the hardware back on, recover the inside with something else...(stick on tile, shelf covering, tough fabric, not sure yet...). Then find some big branches or little tree's and plants.

Very clever and looks very nice. Can't wait to see it all donr and filled with birds.

Love it when people convert furniture pieces into flights/aviaries. Can't wait to see photos of the finished product, with birds added.

Thanks guys, it's been a long time coming. Can't wait to see it finished too, hardest part will be deciding what to put inside.

Are you doing doors on the side? I have an armoire converted to aviary, and I think side doors are a must have. One problem I have is on one side of the aviary, my husband made the door from top to bottom. So when I need to clean the floor area on that side, I risk birds flying out on the top. Not good! I wish he would have listened to me when constructing it (men! ugh). Peal and stick linoleum is great and cheap. I also use puppy pads at the bottom and pine shavings on top. That way when it's time to clean I just roll it all up and toss it. Reline and drop the new shavings. The whole process is done within minutes. That's a very nice hutch! I cant wait to see final pictures!

I did the same thing with a curio from Craigslist. I would like to suggest that you paint the mesh flat black before you install it. You'll be able to see the birds better, with less reflective glare. The only downside is white bird poop shows up really well on black mesh.
