Weather....what works...?

Post by udithooda » Mon Jul 09, 2012 1:44 am

I live in New Delhi, India and the here is in its extremes in all seasons.

Summer: 33-42'C
Winter: 3-20'C
Spring: 12-25'C
Monsoon: 25-35'C with 80%+ humidity and lots of rain

I want to make a Avery outside in my garden(5x8x7ft) in a partly shaded area so in the Summer and Winter it will get direct sun, but not for few hours a day. I already have 11 Zebras, 2 Societies in a portable cage so according to the weather we move them indoors or outdoors. A avery will be fixed so will not have that luxury.

What do you guys think about such weather and is it a good idea to make a outdoor avery in my garden. Are there any solutions to my situation, IF the weather is too extreme??

Thanks

Udit

I don't have experience with an outside aviary, but I do know people in the U.S. who keep their birds in an outside aviary for the summer, then bring them inside to cages/flights for the winter. With your extreme heat in summer, I would think that you would want a misting system, or some way to cool things down. Hopefully, others with experience with outside aviaries and heat will chime in. Welcome to the forum, and be sure to check out the Finch Information Center, linked at left--lots of advice there. I think I will move this to the Housing forum, since it is more to do with housing your birds than health.

Hi Udit,

I'm from Malaysia and I guess the weather here is very similar to India.
I don't have an outdoor aviary yet (under construction) but I always have water for them to cool down in case it's very hot. Yes, sometimes can reach 40'C. That's a big aviary you're building and i'm sure you have space to put a small fountain in it. It can be a good collection to the aviary as well as a place to cool down to all your birds.

Thanks
Naveen

Weve had some brutal weather here and its been up to 108f (42 C) with humidity it felt much hotter..I had to go out and mist the poor little birds. But in reality they didnt appear stressed. The zebra finches were gaping a bit, the diamond doves handle the heat very well and just continued pecking about and building nests. We had a few weeks of high heat between 38C and higher. We've finally come down to a more normal range in the 90's F(32 C+)..I was really worried at first but they handled it so well that Im not to concerned in the future.I do intend to bring them in this winter. We get below freezing and ice storms..

BTW I do hope I got the Fahrenheit to Celsius converted properly.
