question?

Post by miked » Tue Feb 05, 2008 11:59 pm

I have 4 zebra finches in an aquarium 80inches long, 20inches high by 12inches wide (55g). I bought an open-air reptile top at the local store and it works great. I made some perches low to the floor and they have plently of room to fly around. I am currently looking at a new cage sold here locally by a nice lady asking only 75bucks.
Does anyone have anything bad to say about housing birds in an aquarium vs. a cage? thanks

That looks so nice! My only concern would be air circulation, but hopefully with the top that's not a problem. It certainly would cut down on drafts and any mess! How do you feed/water/clean without them escaping?

yes, they get plenty of air as I keep the celing fan on in their room. The top is screened in with two escape holes that screw in/out for easy access for cleaning, food and water changes.
I am going to look at the 75$ cage thursday, found it on craigslist, no pics.
New tank comes with 6 finches too...

That's a pretty nice setup. I would have never thought to do something like that. That's good that you make sure they get good air circulation. Good luck about the used cage.

I had thought of something like that once upon a time but my biggest fear was a bird getting scared and hitting that glass.

Glad its working out for you..

I really like this set up!
I was in a resturant years ago that had finches in a large aquarium. In fact, it was seeing those finches that made my mother get her finches years later. She always talked about those finches, and what a beautiful setting they were in. They had it looking like the wild.

How do you keep the perches stable?

my birds fiqured out where the glass was pretty quick. They fly now right to the end of the tank, then turn around. I keep fake grass in the tank so they know where the walls are.
I cut my perches and use a small piece of velcro on each end. Stays great!

Sweet deal. I too would think the glass might be an issue. Good thing yours are quick learners.

I'd like to know how you clean this type of setup too. It must be easy since its glass, but how you get to it without the birds flying all over? And the bottom?? Or did you make a custom tray for it?

Looks nice. Great idea.

If it was Plexiglas one could drill some holes at each end or even cut a hole in one side big enough to get your hands in to clean. You could take what was cut out and put a plastic hings on it and on the cage and you would have a nice swinging door.

A company like "Tap Plastics" could make you one to your order. The Plexiglas can be glues together and you would have no metal.

Sorry for the long reply, work?
I just put some paper in the bottom, change it every other day. Piece of cake. I bought a top with 2 removable holes for easy acess. I clean on one side while the birds relax on the other side, then switch side. I use that Poopoff cleaner for the perches.
It might not be as easy as a cage, but it is very easy for me only takes 5 minutes.
