Newbie Questions on Housing
I have been confused by the cage calculator - it calculates by Bird whereas, if you read some of the articles, the same calculation is used for a Pair...which is it? My aviary is going to be 51" long by 28" deep (57" high). I am a first timer on finches though I had cockatiels some years ago and truly enjoyed them. Also, if I could get some input: Somewhat copying the style of 3 aviaries, I bought a top of a china hutch and am having it modified. The back has been removed and will be extended using Oak veneer plywood, the 3 doors in the front are being removed in favor of 1 window which will open and the 2 smaller doors will be put on the sides for cleaning access. A tray at the bottom which will slide out. Any thing that shouts "don't do it?

Re: How many birds will fit???
Carlamay, welcome to the forum! Sorry I didn't take care of this earlier, but I am going to split this off into its own thread so it might get more attention and assistance. There is a lot of good reading in the Finch Information Center linked at left, and members are always ready to help answer questions. Also, if you put your location in your profile, it makes it easier to answer locale-specific questions.
I'll let some of the other members help you here--I'm late for my bird club meeting--as usual.

I am attending the 1st Bird Club meeting today at Ft. Worth Bird Club. Hope to get the single vs pair question answered so that I do not overcrowd.

Re: Newbie Questions on Housing
That looks like it will be an awesome cage!!!
I did something similar with an armoire, and I (and the birds) love it!! It looks great in the living room too, although I wish it were a little bigger like yours. More wider actually.
I think your plan sounds great, and whatever you choose, the birds and you will get used to the design.
One caution I can give: the top of my cage is made of clear acrylic and when I first put the birds in there, they flew up against it a lot until they learned the boundaries. I was very afraid they'd break something actually. I'd suggest to make some Xs on your glass with some masking tape, so they realize it's there and get used to the boundaries. After a few days you can remove it.
Good luck!
I can't help in the # of birds department to put in there..
I house 4 Gouldians and 2 cordon bleu in mine, and it's not as wide as yours.... I'm sure the calculator would tell me it's too small for 6 finches, but they honestly seem really happy in there
