Finches can live in tanks, but fish tanks are also hard to clean. The biggest problem with them is ventilation. but a screen top can solve that. Personally, I would not put finches in a tank less than 20 gallons long(30 inches) because they need flight room and I do not believe a 10 gallon(20 inches long) provides that for them.

Just my tidbit.

Go on craigslist or go to garage sales and find cages. That's what I do :] (just be sure to sanitize them first)

I think putting birds in fish tanks is nothing but cruel. Its bad for the birds such health risks and the birds flying into glass causing injuries. I wouldnt recommend it and i hope you dont consider it either.

-BB-.....maybe if you explain to your Mom the dangers of using a glass tank she might allow you to buy a more appropriately sized cage even if it is a few more dollars.

I am usung a glas stank as a hospital ONLY , Leting them live in a 10 gallon NO WAY TO SMALL< ya can use vynol on side to let hem no where the glass is but I would NOT use one persoanally, and if ya MUST I would go atleast 50 gallon.
watch graigslist for some inexpensive cages.
I sold tons of mine last year 3 stacks and stand for $50.00

If you compare the cost of a tank to a cage I think the cage would be cheaper and better for the birds. I wouldn't do something like that unless you were a very very experienced birder.

Personally I wouldn't use a tank either but as soon as FF gives me pictures of her hospital tank we'll be able to see it.

I think turning the tank on the side (like she did) will help with ventilation and cleaning. I would think that you'll be able to construct a front out of wire mesh and be able to include a slide out for easy cleaning. Also it would be easier to place perches and a door to prevent escapes.

I'm with the other people on this tough, a second hand good sized cage might be better.

tx FF. I'm really impressed it looks awesome. You mentioned something about a heat source as well. Do you use the heat pads they sell in pet stores for reptiles?

I use a heat lamp they sell for lizards the red ones. I have the bulb in one of those small black reflectors they also sale and i clamp it onto the cage wire. I lik ethese because the bird can get away from the heat or snuggle in closer,

I have that Lizard lamp too...I love it because it has the dimmer switch on for adjusting the light and heat level!

Ok FF - I know I posted something about the tank, I guess I missed the rest of this thread, anyway I like the idea. I just don't have any spare tanks.
