Which color?

Post by PrettyBird » Mon Oct 29, 2012 4:46 pm

Ive been thinking about buying a new flight cage for my gouldians. I really like the HQ flights.

I was wondering, for those of you that have the cages what color cage did you like best? (white, black, navy etc) and why?

do you have pictures of your HQ flights set up with birds in it?

I would really appreciate any advice/pics so I can make my decision :)

I really think its all based on personal preference. I don't have pictures but I can tell you what I know/have been told.

I personally like black - it goes with the rest of my decor and I find it looks very sleek and clean But I find that the black doesn't offset the birds colors all that well and I've had people tell me they don't like how easily it shows dust etc. kind of like anything that's black.

White - is nice because the birds really "pop" in white cages and they don't show dust as much (what I'm told). I don't like them because any little mess the birds make whether it be poop, seed etc sticks out like a sore thumb and looks dirty.

My compromise I would say would be more of the silver color. You get the best of both worlds. It's darker than white so any mess doesn't stick out like a sore thumb but it's not so dark that it hides the birds. Dust should also be a lot less noticeable.

I presently own a black double flight. I will try and add some pictures shortly. I prefer the black as it matches decor easily and can be spruced up with greenery. The only thing I do not like about the black colour is it shows the mess quicker than a lighter colour would.

Thats what I hear too. Black is nice, but shows poop/dust etc easier than white. Silver would be a good choice too. My vision cages are silver, and my birds really show up nice in them.

The only thing that I guess would stop me is because of the mess that would be created with the cages. Any flap of their wings and seed hulls, feathers etc will go flying onto the floor.

I think Im so used to my vision cages and literally no mess

I would, however love to see pictures of the HQ cages they have with their finches in it.

Color would be a personal preference, or what will look nice in your home. I have purchased most of my HQ flights used, so I have an assortment of colors--black, white, dark green, and gray. The darker colors do show up the poop more. I'll see if I can find some photos.

Here are a couple of photos of HQ flight cages. The double flight is dark green, and the two single flights are dark green and white. I realize now that I don't have very many photos of entire cages, most of my photos are of the birds inside, so little of the cage shows.

And yes, you will have some mess outside the cages. This is one reason I like the seed hoppers, as they contain the hulls some.

I like the dark green because it looks more natural than th other colors.

Dee it is Really hard leaving behind the vision cages lol. I have both and I Love the vision cages for the no mess. If you use a seed hopper in the vision cage you get absolutely nothing for a mess at all! I really wish they came in more sizes because I'd probably keep only vision cages then lol. With all of my other cages there is a mess. Doesn't matter what you do there is always a bit of a mess. The seed hoppers help that a lot. My owls and gouldians are really clean birds for the most part. I get barely a mess if at all. My canaries on the other hand.... Are a mess. There's no better way to put it lol. They get seed everywhere and if I give them a hopper they Empty it out completely to get to their favorite! I really think its a game for them. My hookbills are cleaner than my canaries lol.

Honestly for the amount of birds you have and the types of birds you have I wouldn't worry about the mess. There are ways to help minimize it.

1) get them eating from the seed hoppers. It will reduce your mess drastically.
2) use some kind of liner (like puppy pads) or bedding (corn cob, substrate etc) and use a cat litter scoop or lizard scoop to clean out the dirty parts. This stuff will last you a long time.
3) they aren't pretty but if you really want to stay clean you can always put a seed catcher around the cage or DIY one that's looks nice.

Thank you for sharing your cages :)

I think I really like the double flights. They seem alot more worth the price.

@Dayna  yea I know the vision cages are awesome! I think Im just getting a little tired of lifting the whole cage up to clean the bottom.
I also wish the cages were bigger. I think one of my cages is the biggest one they make.

As for seed hoppers....well I kinda got creative and made my own lol

I went to the dollar store, got a few of these bird feeders, attached it to the side of the cage near the bottom and then use a terra cotta dish underneath that. It collects all the hulls. And I just pull out the terra cotta dish and dump the hulls in the garbage

I dont have a pic of it all set up, but heres a pic of the feeder

Im also debating on maybe joining 2 cages with zip ties, to make a flight. But I want a good brand cage...?
