Today I finished halving my third Prevue 31W x 41H x 20D to have upper & lower condos. I am sooooooooo happy! I've gotten so good at it after 3 cages the hardware cloth bottom for the upper half fits PERFECTLY. I zip tie it in place & put a central "beam" 30" long under the middle of the top half to give it stability. I use newspaper over the hardware cloth for the flooring. Works like a charm.

I put my 6 Gouldian chicks in there (fledged 10/11); the 2 blue ones on top & the green back/split to blue on the bottom. They look as happy as clams.

Since there parents have started a new clutch, I wanted the chicks out of there. With 8 birds in a cage it gets so FILTHY.

that sounds really cool! i should "half" one of my bigger cages too! what a great idea

This is something I also thought about doing. Do you have any photos of the final product an what you put between upper and lower cages?

Great job!! I did this to two cages using the trays instead of the wire. Works well. Most finches stay to the top anyway.

How did you use the trays? Did you just attach them to sides of cage somehow?

Dolly....thanks for posting photos. I love your setup.....what a great idea to maximize your cage usage! Can you tell me what the material is that you are using for the center support under the wire?

I have some HQ flights so each space would be bigger by an inch in depth and width but shorter in overall height. I wonder if I could still make it work for my cages even so. I will have to request a consultation with my resident engineer to see what he could do for me.

Your bird room looks so nice too....lots of sunlight streaming in.

Deborah; thanks for the compliments (also all of you). Now don't laugh when I tell you what the center support is that runs the 30" length of the cage under the hardware cloth. It's a 2-1/2" wide curtain rod, the kind you use with wide top hem curtains. As you know, they are 2 pieces that slide apart, so you can make it any length you want. In the other flight I had a 4" wide piece of glass shelving 32" long. I also had a friend cut some wooden slats 1" wide x 21" long which I slide in under the hardware cloth at the ends.
The hardware cloth is easy to work with. You fold the ends under & then flatten them with a pliers to kingdom come. Makes a nice flat piece which you tie strap to the frame. Easy Peasy.
