What is Bird Soil???
I am getting a pair of Gold Breasted Finches next week and have been doing some research. One article
stated using Bird Soil or Peat in a flat dish to feed the GB's. Can anyone help out with this...? Thanks

Never heard of "bird soil" or "peat" in relation to birds. Can you post a url link to the article you saw these in?

Re: What is Bird Soil???
Im not positive but I would think "bird soil" is soil that's bird safe and peat is peat moss. Though I don't know why you would be feeding them this and not planting seeds in it.

Here is the site:

They mention bird soil and unfertilized peat down by the fledgling photo.

It also states they don't like typical finch feeders and prefer flat pan/dishes with the bird soil or peat with the seeds in the dishes.

Re: What is Bird Soil???
Sounds like they want the birds to feel like they're eating off the ground, more natural? Can't read the link right now but will as soon as I can.

I think the original link was the one she intended to post...psilocybin6 wrote: Right site (a great site btw) but the posted link is wrong... This is the link: http://www.hofmann-photography.de/html/ ... seeds.html ...This method works great but it may not be practical depending on the type of enclosure.
I agree- it sounds like they are going for a more natural feeding experience.

Re: What is Bird Soil???
I often feed soaked and sprouted seeds to my birds - especially at breeding time. I'm giving some right now to my new java parents. I can do without the soil, however. It seems that once the birds crap in the "sterile" soil, it's only asking for trouble. JMO. Bob

Re: What is Bird Soil???
Interesting I think I will just give them reg. finch seed and sprouted seed in a dish type feeder to start out
and then put a seed hopper in the cage as well to get them used to it.
Thanks Folks for you input.... will post photos when I get them next week.
