Just wondering if I won't have any escapees with this size mesh, they're going out in an 8Lx6Hx3W aviary.

There is no way they will get through 1/4" mesh, even the fledglings will be fine. Since this will be an outside aviary, do you have a safety catch area? Otherwise, when you open the door to go inside, these little guys are so quick that they will be past you and out the door before you can even react.

No catchhold, but the aviary is in a screened patio, so if they do escape they shouldn't get too far. The door is pretty small anyways, just big enough for me to get through.

I was just wondering since I read the fledglings can still get through 1/4 mesh, I found that hard to believe but better safe than sorry.

I have always used 7/16" or 1/2" mesh without a problem with several varieties of waxbills...indoor and outdoor aviaries.
