Just set up a new flight today.

It will be my African flight. It's a big flight that will contain Blue Caps, Senegal Fires and Lavenders. They will get a healthy dose of meal worms and wingless fruit flies as I am working on raising both. I will also add termites to their menu when the weather warms up. They have plenty of nests (different styles), various nesting material, and greenery. Hopefully this will provide some good results as I am really trying to concentrate on African species right now.

Sounds great. Will it be an out door or indoor flight?
Got any pics?
Do you source your termites from the wild or it there a place to mail order them?

It's indoors. I will get them from the woods behind my house.

It's one of my first one's I built. I re-worked it and added some upgrades that made it easier to maintain. It's also down in my basement now. The lights are now external as well. Internal lights were too much of a pain when a bulb went out.

I keep seeing everyone elses custom built flights and its making me want to make one...
But I notice one thing... Alot are tall...
I was thinking of maybe 18" D x 36" H x 60" W
I am leaning towards length because my two love to fly lengthwise in thier 18" x 18" x 30" they have now...

That is a gorgeous cage!! Will the lavenders get along well with the CBs? That will be a beautiful mix of colors :]

I have never had Lavenders be agressive. They should get along good. Most species will get a tad bit snippy if they have babies though...especially when others come near their nest.
The length of the cage is the most important think, but I like the height of it because I can put nests at different levels. My fires will go to the nests a little closer to the ground. If you can do a taller cage, I think it makes cleaning and feeding easier. You can put a tube feeder in a taller flight.

Length is the most important but height is beneficial for muscle tone too, so as much height as you can give is also good. I have all the food and water on the bottom of the aviaries. Not only is it more natural to get your seed and water on the ground but they get more exercise flying up and down.

Agreed Debbie. I have found that my birds breed more readily if they have more of a "natural ground" to go to instead of cage grates. No knock on cage grates. I think it just helps with nest building and feeding. I too make them go more to the ground to get food (egg food, greens, worms, etc.) I think all of the above is more true for waxbills maybe.

I love that aviary, Chase. And I agree, many of the waxbills spend more time on the ground than other species. That is why I have removed the grates on all my cages. I notice you used the screen doors to build your aviary, which makes it much easier to put together. For those who are new here, this type aviary is described here:

Chase, that is an AWESOME flight! Are you a carpenter by trade? Or did you just put that together out of nowhere? I wish I lived closer, I'd pay you to build me flights! lol
