What are your favorite type of heat lamps for indoor aviaries? and where did you purchase them?

I use the same fixtures as Lisa with ceramic heater emitters like these http://www.petco.com/product/5003/Zoo-M ... SiteSearch

Be sure to use fixtures with a ceramic base to prevent a fire hazzard.

One thing I've learned over time, is that you should force the sick bird to drink. The heat is good. They dry out on you when they're sick. Sometimes I have added a damp blanket to create a humid box too (egg binding). I set a regular lamp infront of a who cage. The lamp is at one end of the box, so that the bird can pick the spot (temperature) that it finds most enjoyable.

Lisa~ we have one of the type you recommened....and we like it....however i like the idea of the infra red no "light" as we could keep it on all night if we had to and the bird could still get rest.....

does anyone use heat lamps all the time? year round? to prevent chilling from drafts, opening doors etc? our house is set at 72 degrees year round....but sometimes the birds will puff like they might be cold if they are on a perch and not in a nest???? does this sound right? they dont act sick at all....

I have a few cages with incandescent lamps on them. But these lamps go on with the other lamps, and off at night.
The juvenille feather out cage is one with a lamp. I also move molting males into that cage.

I use extra heat in the hospital cage for sick birds.

My thermostat is set at 70 during the day and 65 at night. The bird room has numerous fluorescent tube shop lights, so I'm sure they get some warmth from that, but otherwise, I do not use heat lamps normally. I will put a heat lamp on a cage if I suspect a bird isn't feeling well, but usually I move the bird to a smaller/hospital cage with a heat lamp. I LOVE the ceramic heat emitters!

I have one of the "no light" heat emitters too and it's great, especially for evening when the birds are trying to sleep.

The other bulbs I have used are the purple incandescent bulbs (low light in the dark too so as not to disrupt sleep) and I recently purchased a few of the infrared lights in red though I've never actually used them yet.

I wish I had stocked up on the no light heat emitters but haven't seen them around in a while. Probably will need to search for and purchase them online.
