Building Scratch and Sniff's new home...

Post by EyesofFreedom » Sat Mar 09, 2013 12:54 am

Ok first off here is the link to where I bought it...

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00176 ... UTF8&psc=1

I opened the box and studied the instructions... and like alot of reviews they could have been clearer...

Needless to say I just looked at it and figured what went where and started at the base... in about 30 minutes I had it assembled (by myself while my daughters slept  )

I agreed to take a pair of green singers from a friend (they were her mother-in-law's but she passed away) b/c I saw in the picture they came with a cage with similar dimensions to your new one! Out the green singers went into the aviary and their cage now has my first pair of gouldians and their seven babies.

those will be some happy birds! great space for them.

not sure if you know this yet or not, but a word of caution about adding more birds: finches should be kept in either single pairs, or in groups of three pairs or more. two pairs seldom make a happy cage - they bicker too much with each other. i like to look at it as add a third pair, and while the first two pairs bicker, the third pair steals whatever it was they were fighting over, ending the argument pretty quick.

Congrats on the new cage for your birds! I have the same cage for my gouldians. They love it. The only thing I didnt like was the seed mess all over the floor (I had them in vision cages before, so never had any mess)

I went looking for some plastic to wrap 4 inches high around the base. Couldnt find anything cheap enough, so right now I used plastic wrap. Did the trick, I still get some seed, but not nearly as much as before.

Looks great! I have 2 of these. The inside dimensions are 40HX20DX30W. I have 8 birds in one and its a bit crowded because they mostly stay @ the top. Just wanted to let you know before you buy too many birds and wind up needing more cages like I did! I think 6 is perfect. Amazon is the BEST!!! Enjoy :D

Ali lol that is hilarious

Debbie thanks...

Ria and Ginene I was actually thinking about that... 6 would be awesome :)

Dee I decided not to use the seed cups that came with it... instead I have dishes on the floor of the cage (not under perches) with seed, water and egg food in them... I had a mess with my 18x18x30 flight and got a seed catcher but when I put the food on the floor the mess disappeared so I did the same as soon as I put them in the new cage ;)

I too dont use the seed cups that came with the cage for food (only for things like herb salad & dry eggfood)
I put my food on the bottom of the cage as well, and have them in feeders. The first week I thought wow no mess! Then they would start flying and flapping, and then I had a ton of mess on the floor.
So thats why I had to wrap plastic around the bottom (4 inches up or so) and the mess has drastically decreased.

Hey Will,
One quick question...do the feeding cups that came with your cage fit??? Both sets that came with my cages don't. They will only fit where there is a door opening, which keeps the door open a tiny bit. I actually tried to have amazon send me an extra set of cups, but they needed me to order an entire new cage to get them. So I did. No big deal because the new set was perfect, plus amazon paid for return pick-up of the extra cage. I'm loving both of my flights!!! As are my birds :D I purchased 2 vacation feeders for each flight (the ones SALLY recommended) and only use the feeding cups for egg food, veggies and soaked seeds. My birds poop in anything that doesn't have a hooded cover on it :P ...
