Flight Plans

After I move, I'm going to get a pair of Gouldian Finches. I've started planning a flight for them. It's going to be 5' x 2' x 2'. I'm going to build it so its on top of another cage of the same size with a 6" gap between them, so I can put lights on the bottom one. I plan on putting my budgies down there at first. After they get their own flight cage I'll use the bottom one for another type of finch (I've been considering Java Sparrows). I just have a few questions.

First, I'm gonna put fake plants in the flight for the Gouldians, for the bottom one too when I have finches in it. I just don't know where to buy them. Everywhere I looked they have really expensive plants. So, where do you guys buy the plants you put in you cages?

I'm going to put natural branches in both flights. If I just went out and got random branches would that be fine or should I get certain kinds? I have an apple tree in my backyard, so I could take from that.

Sounds like a nice plan.
I use silk plants that I find here and there, always have an eye out for such things. Craft and hobby stores are a good place to start.
Any branch that is not dead or rotten would be fine, I've used branches from different shrubs, oaks, maples and fruit trees.
good luck

Search the forum for threads on safe branches/plants to use for finches. Also check out how people get them ready for the cage. Very interesting and useful. I used branches from my pear tree. Don't use branches near a curb or driveway...fumes from vehicles are dangerous (just something I had read on line)

Thanks, I'm going to go hiking a lot this summer so I don't have to worry about the car fumes. I'll keep an eye out for cheap fake plants to use.

Walmart has some fake plants that are less expensive. But I like Goodwill better, because theirs are very cheap. Sometimes you can get a whole large fake plant, and cut off the individual branches.

Garage sales are also good, Practically giveaways.

I wouldn't think you would have to worry about peoples cast off silk plants being contaminated with anything, but if you have any doubts, wash them off, and spray or soak them in bleach.
