ceramic lamps
Does anyone know of a good place to find a ceramic heat lamp?

Ceramic Heat Lamps
Most pet stores that sell reptiles, sell ceramic heat lamps - at least they sell the bulbs - then you can buy a fixture to put the bulb in (such as an aluminum reflector type fixture sold for a grow light), in any hardware store.
If you can't find ceramic heat lamps in a pet store near you, just Google "Ceramic Heat Lamp" and I'm sure many are sold over the internet.
I use a ceramic heat lamp for my Gouldians, which like the extra heat. You can just see it in this photo, above my Gouldians - I have the ceramic bulb, in an aluminum reflector, resting on the top of their cage.

Re: Ceramic Heat Lamps
Thank you so much. I have seen people with them at the bird shows. But I was wondering about the wattage and also should I get one that doesn't make a light at night or one that lights up. My birds are in a sun room aviary and not in a cage, but I have a cage in there with the door open for them to go into if the choose to.

Excuse me please for jumping in here - I also have been wondering about the wattage. I looked at ceramic lamps and red heat lights at the pet store and wondered how you choose.
If you have a breeder cage, 30x18x18, witht the light over it, would you use a lower wattage (50? 75?) than if you had a mini aviary, 32x21x48 ?
Because of the distance between the lamp and the perch? Is there a formula to determine what wattage to use?
Do you have two light fixtures, one with full spectrum lighting over the whole cage, and one single heat lamp aimed at one corner where there is a perch?
Thanks!

That's the same with me. Iwas wondering if i could just use a long fish tank klight or something but at night i would also have a ceramic heat lamp with a red bulb. i had a reply earlier on a post i did and they use for a 75 watt light i think that might be the one i need. my cage is 5' long 3' tall and wide.

I got my ceramic heat lamps from PetsMart. The price at the store was quite high, $35 or $39 if I remember right, but at their website, they were more like $25, so I price matched. I actually rarely used mine this winter. I used to have the birds in a large unheated shed, and space heaters didn't quite work, so I had heat lamps on each cage. Now they are in a small bird room, I have a space heater which keeps the temps quite warm, so I only need the heat lamps if I have a sick bird. I keep that room so warm because I am trying to breed waxbills, and they don't like it cold. If I had only Zebs or Societies or any of the more hardy species, I would keep it much cooler.

it sure is taking some time for me to get used to the idea that some of you unlucky people need to place a lamp near the cage for added heat/warmth.
What makes some of us Unlucky???
It could be 90 degrees outside and I still have that heat lamp on one end so a sick bird has access to it,
For me its not about keepin them warm but them having access if they want it,
