dumb question on bar spacing

From what I understand, .5 is the largest bar spacing we can use for finches? Is this correct? Does that mean that .375 or 3/8 would not work? I am REALLY bad at the math thing. I found a really nice Prevue cage with that spacing.

Thank you!

0.375 or 3/8 bar spacing will work for your finches.

It is smaller than the .5 and will work just fine. I have .375 bar spacing. Good luck with your finches!

Also, you should try Amazon for Prevue cages. You will definitely find some at great deals and half that price!

That is actually a great price for that cage. I have seen it for way more than that...and free shipping too???? Score! (I checked and amazon.com has it for the same price with free shipping if you are a Prime Member) Fyi, finches tend to use the top half of these cages. I have 3 large flight cages similar in size and find that most of my finches only want to stay within the top half of them. One of the experts advised me to put feeders and water sources within the bottom half to encourage the birds to use the whole cage. This definitely helps, although my birds still prefer to hang out/sleep/nest within the top half only. Best of luck and enjoy your awesome new flight!

This happens because birds feel safer when they are at top.

I am not sure if that is the cage to get. Someone just told me for breeding hard to breed finches, that the cage needed to be about 3 feet wide by 3 feet tall.

What do y'all think?

My cages are spaced 1/2 inch. I have Zebra finches, so there are smaller finches. I've never had a bird slip through the bars. I'm not so sure that there is smaller spacing than 1/2 inch.

It is not necessary that the cage should be 3' x 3'. Some of the 'factory breeders' even use 1.5' x 1.5'. However, the cage should be large enough so that the birds can fly inside the cage. It is essential for their good health.

This is the Prevue cage that I have and I am extremely happy with it (bought it on Amazon). I am currently housing four finches in it. However, I am not trying to breed them, so I cannot speak to that.

I have two of the prevue cages I think you are talking about. My birds are breeding well in them. Several owl clutches this year and now one pair of Parrot Finches are incubating at night so hopefully parent raised PF's are coming up!
My food and water dishes are low, and I have natural branches and fake greenery. It works really well, and my birds use the whole cage and are very active.
